Abstract
Are science communication and technology marketing the same? Jess Tyler explores the similarities, differences and cross-overs by examining the communication requirements using a national research centre case study and a high-tech innovative example – and one that is both! From the perspective of science-2-business communication, the discussion will explore how both areas require different planning and different techniques, and will producing enlightening insights into the nuances of the target market as these aspects are unraveled.
How do science ‘consumers’ differ from technology ‘buyers’ and how do we need to adjust our communication methods to suit? Is there a ‘selling’ in science communication and is there ‘education’ in technology marketing? It all depends on the aims and objectives of the organisation – and herein lies the rub – what’s the communication objective and how do we define it for science-based business and business-oriented science?
