Below you will find links to the information you may need depending on the type of hat you are wearing at any point in time. All Participants
You will need to have created a profile in the session producer/speakers portal. Once you have created your initial profile you can log back in at any time to review your information. Each of the following types of contribution are submitted and managed via this portal.

Session and Workshop Producer
Thank you all for the many wonderful sessions you have proposed. We are no longer accepting session proposals for the 2014 conference. You should have received acceptance letters. You will need to ensure you have:
- Registered yourself (session producer): do this via the speaker portal (where you submitted your proposal, bios and photos)
- All your speakers registered via the standard delegate registration portal
- Your FINAL session blurb, speaker bios and photos are uploaded in the producer/speakers portal or, at this late stage, emailed to asc2014@eventcorp.com.au. This is very important as this is the information published in the handbook, online and elsewhere. Please include a 200 word abstract/summary at the top of your proposal document.
- Advised us of unusual audio-visual. If you need to update us of any additional requirements please email this information to asc2014@eventcorp.com.au.
- Additional photos and session blurbs can be emailed to asc2014@eventcorp.com.au & cc program.committee@asc.asn.au.
Confirmed speakers
PowerPoint/Prezi files are all due on 10th January 2014.
All session speakers need to register. There are a few options:
- Register just for their session (choosing the Session Speaker registration option)
- Register for the day
- Register for the full conference.
They should register using the standard registration page.
(Session producers who have uploaded session proposals (see more above) and speakers / paper presenters (see more below) who have used the speaker portal, should register via the speaker portal.)
Speaker / Paper Presenter
Many impressive case studies, research and other papers have been submitted that bring today’s science communication to life. We encourage you to have pre-conference engagement in your topics to get early involvement from delegates. Thanks to you we anticipate our inaugural conference proceedings to be very diverse.
The below should already be with the conference organisers – if not, please submit immediately to asc2014@eventcorp.com.au:
- Final abstract for publishing in proceedings, handbook, online and elsewhere (no need to resubmit if your previous version was already final)
- A high resolution photograph
- A biography
PowerPoint/Prezi files are all due on 10th January 2014.
If you have been allocated an individual presentation you will have 10 minutes to present and 5 minutes for questions. Some speakers may have longer slots but if this is the case, you would have been notified.
Posters
Roll up, roll up and sign up for the one, the only, ASC poster session! There’ll be thrills, spills and maybe even canapés as we give you the soapbox you’ve always dreamed of to tell the world about your amazing research or science communication initiatives.
This is a great way to communicate your work and meet others working in overlapping areas. Posters will be on display throughout the conference and we’ll have a dedicated session in the program for you to present your work and take questions.

Science Art Exhibitor
From artwork to illustration to diagrams, visuals play a significant role in science communication. They tell stories, emphasise points, convey messages. They also engage you, inspire you and give pause for appreciation.
Have you ever created science-y visual materials? Keep reading! This year, in ASC’s 20th year, we will be hosting yet another science art exhibition SPECTRUM to explore the range of art inspired by science, science communication enhanced by artists’ tools and reflections of the sci comm community. You will need to bring your printed artwork to be mounted on display during the conference. Selected entrants will have a chance to share their work with the entire audience in one minute and with one slide in one of the Visual Fast Forward sessions, which will occur in plenary sessions.

Science Cabaret Participant
Inspire and entertain your peers after the conference dinner with a science demo, story or comedy piece of eight minutes. Anything goes in Science Cabaret, which allows you to showcase innovative approaches to communication in front of a friendly audience. For example, you may wish to present a poem, video, song or a new twist on a traditional presentation.
There will be an informal audience voting system (with no defined evaluation criteria.) Both experienced science communicators and novices are encouraged to take part, and voting will be in separate categories.
Application will be through the conference registration process: you will need to supply a title, a description of your act, genre (demo, music, comedy, talk, video, story etc), along with a short bio (50 – 100 words) and whether you wish to participate in the novice category.
Expressions of interest have officially closed.
The fine print
- Acts are limited to strictly eight minutes.
- There are limited slots available on the night: we will do our best to include as many participants as possible, selection will be based on showcasing a range of performances and experience.
- Available resources at the venue are still to be confirmed but will likely include: a screen for projecting presentations, PC/Mac, cordless microphone, PA system, dimmable lights.
- Participants will need to provide AV, power and any other requirements and risk assessments before the event. The venue has some testing requirements around electrical equipment which we will circulate to those who express an interest in participating.
- There will be limited help available for setup and packup, for heavy or complicated equipment so please bring your own roadies.
- Participants must ensure that the stage is clean and tidy for the next participant.
