Abstract

Despite the move to ‘third wave’ science communication focusing on engagement, there is still substantial anxiety in policy discourses guiding funding for science communication and among science communication practitioners. This anxiety centres around those who are seen to be ‘opting out’ of science communication or engagement activities.

This panel is a focused collection of some of the latest theory and research across disciplines (sociology, media and cultural studies, economics, social studies of science) that addresses this anxiety and offers new ways of thinking about audiences for science communication.
